What Is Trench Mesh

Purpose-built reinforcement for narrow footings

Trench mesh is a type of mesh composed of welded steel wires. It reinforces concrete footings, footpaths, retaining walls, service trenches and strip foundations.

Unlike standard square or rectangular reinforcing mesh, trench mesh features a narrow profile with longitudinal wires and transverse cross-wires. This configuration makes it suitable for reinforcing narrow concrete footings and helps resist tensile stresses when correctly positioned and specified as part of an engineered design.

Choosing the Right Reinforcement

When to use trench mesh vs other reinforcement

The correct type of reinforcement depends on your project's engineering specifications, including the structural design, loading requirements and dimensions of the concrete element. Always follow your engineer's recommendations when selecting reinforcement. Below are some common reinforcement types and their typical applications to help you understand which options may be suitable for your project.

Trench mesh

  • Commonly used in strip footings, ground beams and other concrete elements.
  • Provides longitudinal reinforcement in a convenient, factory-welded configuration.
  • Supplied in standard configurations for efficient handling and installation, helping reduce on-site cutting and assembly.

Separate reinforcing bars

  • Individual bars can be cut, bent and arranged to meet specific engineering requirements.
  • Offer flexibility for complex footing geometries, connections and applications requiring customised reinforcement.
  • May require more on-site measuring, cutting, bending and placement, depending on the design.

Square mesh

  • Welded reinforcement mesh with evenly spaced wires in both directions.
  • Commonly used in concrete slabs and other applications requiring reinforcement in two directions.
  • Generally suited to broader concrete areas rather than narrow footings, where trench mesh may offer a more convenient configuration.

Rectangular mesh

  • Welded reinforcement mesh with different wire spacings in each direction.
  • Used in slabs and other concrete applications where reinforcement requirements vary by direction.
  • May be suitable for particular structural applications, but the required mesh configuration and orientation must match the engineering specifications.
Applications

Applications for trench mesh in Sydney construction

Residential Footings

Commonly used in residential strip footings and ground beams beneath load-bearing walls. Trench mesh provides longitudinal reinforcement to help resist tensile stresses and control cracking when correctly specified and installed. Available lengths, wire sizes and spacing depend on the product configuration.

Strip Foundations

Used in strip foundations beneath load-bearing walls and along building perimeters. Trench mesh provides reinforcement along the length of the footing, helping the concrete withstand the stresses associated with building loads and ground movement.

Edge Beams

Used in suitable slab edge beams to provide longitudinal reinforcement along the slab perimeter. When correctly positioned according to the engineering design, trench mesh helps the edge beam resist bending stresses and control cracking.

Retaining Wall Footings

May be specified as part of the reinforcement in retaining wall footings, depending on the wall design and loading conditions. Reinforcement placement, bar sizes and concrete cover must follow the engineer's specifications, taking into account soil pressure, footing dimensions and exposure conditions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes of trench mesh are available?

Our trench mesh comes in 6000mm lengths, with long wire diameters of 12, 11 and 8mm. For more information on our trench mesh sizes and other mesh specs, refer to our specification table.

How quickly can you deliver trench mesh to my Sydney site?

Typically, we can deliver mesh to you within 24-48 hours of your order. Our team will consult with you and your engineer to find the best possible delivery time in line with your other site operations, and can also make emergency deliveries of materials where required.

Is your trench mesh ACRS certified?

Yes, all of our trench mesh is ACRS certified. This means you can count on it having the quality and structural integrity needed to support everything from small residential builds to large-scale commercial projects. Each order also comes with testing documentation that confirms your mesh's certification.

Can you supply trench mesh for large commercial projects?

Sydney Reo can supply quantities of trench mesh for large commercial builds. We're experienced in supplying large-scale works, and also offer bulk pricing for large orders.

What's the difference between trench mesh and standard rectangular mesh?

Trench mesh is made of long, narrow welded steel wires, unlike the wider rectangular configuration of standard mesh. As trench mesh is prefabricated for trench applications (such as narrow trenches, strip footings and edge beams), it is quicker to install and less labour-intensive than rectangular mesh.
